Southern Style  Black-Eyed Pea Soup

Black-Eyed Pea Soup is a southern dish served as a part of, New Year’s tradition to bring you good luck. It's an easy to make and healthy soup recipe.  This hearty soup recipe uses simple ingredients.

Where did the tradition of eating  Black-Eyed Pea on New Year's come from?

History offers several explanations and a lot of cultures have their own variations. Some say its a southern tradition for bringing in luck and prosperity in the New Year. Traditions since the Civil War embedded deep in Southern and African American history.

Key Ingredients

Dried Black Eyed Peas Vegetable Broth Collard Greens Mirepoix mix of diced, onion, celery and garlic Bell Peppers Seasoning & Spices  Crushed Tomatoes Vegan Liquid smoke

Step One

Wash collard greens. destem and cut greens. Dry and set aside. 

Step Two

Place the black eyed peas in a colander and rinse with cool water. Drain well. Sort through them and remove any debris.

Step Three

Chop and add holy trinity blend of onions, celery and bell peppers to instant pot.

Step Four

Heat oil with the sauté function of your Instant Pot. Add the onion, celery, and bell pepper and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté another minute.

Step Five

Add the dry black eyed peas, broth, and crushed tomatoes.

Step Six

Add thyme, chili powder, paprika, oregano, salt, pepper, liquid smoke and bay leaf. Stir to combine. Cook for 18 minutes. Serve with cornbread and enjoy.
