    Vegan or otherwise chickpeas aka garbanzo beans are definitely a superfood of plant based protein. We've compiled over 20+ healthy, easy vegan chickpea based lunch, dinner and a few desserts recipes too. Legumes are a must have in a vegan, vegetarian or plant based diet and chickpea are a easy way to pack in protein.

    Beans definitely have a reputation; let's me honest, beans can make you gassy. This is a sad fact but please don't let that put you off on including these in your weekly meal planning. Outside of gassy digestive distress, that’s really the only con. Now lets get into the benefits.

    Legumes are typically low in fat, contain no cholesterol, and are high in folate, potassium, iron and magnesium. They also contain beneficial fats and soluble and insoluble fiber. A good source of protein, legumes can be a healthy substitute for meat, which has more fat and cholesterol.

    A Few Ways To Reduce Gas Caused By Beans

    • Use can beans. The canning process helps to break down some of the carbohydrates that cause the gas in the first place
    • Buy a digestive aid like Beano. Beano helps you digest the beans better and causes less gas
    • Soak beans and rinse the soaking water to remove some of the carbohydrates that lead to digestive issues

    Every year we get a new super food or rock star vegetable. It reminds me of one our favorite Portlandia episode "The Celery Incident" (clip below)

    Chickpeas are definitely the new cauliflower and rightly so. With their mild flavor, high nutritional and protein value everyone can benefit from a daily little snack of hummus, guacamole and chips or veggies slices to rev up the protein with a tiny calorie count.
