Vegan honey 🍯 is probably one of the most controversial topics you can bring up in the vegan community. Its kinda hard to review a new-ish vegan honey product without giving a little context; especially for new vegans. But if you're here because you just want to know if you should spend fifteen bucks for this "honey" substitute. Completely fair, and feel free to skip to the bottom to find out if we liked it.
If you're really just looking for more natural types of alternatives you can try things like: agave nectar, maple syrup, date syrup, an apple juice honey concentrate or dandelion honey - all of these have been used as substitutions. None will give you that exact viscosity that you get from bee's honey but some can give you a nice subtle sweetness.

Is Honey Vegan?
Short answer to the majority of vegans is no. The longer answer is it may depend on why you became vegan. There are vegans that eat honey. Current numbers say about 20% of people who identify as vegan eat honey.
The reason why most vegans do not eat honey is because its an animal by product like cow's milk or chicken eggs. One could argue that it’s a by-product from an insect and that some of the honey, if not eaten goes to waste. Are pollinators like bee's at risk or in decline? This conversation could go on and on and easily be an entire article. So we'll just review the honey but you can find lots of articles going into depths about bees and veganism.

Vegan Honey Alternatives
We talked about some of the natural alternatives above like apple and dandelion honey’s.
Seems there are always a few different brands trying to capture that unique texture and flavor of real honey. In our experience we haven’t found any that really came close to natural honey. These are two we've seen in the store recently. Simple Truth available at Kroger/Albertson. We've purchased Single Origin at Sprouts Farmers Market but I believe this may have been recently discontinued.

Our Review
What Does Mellody Honey taste like?
Mellody honey tastes a lot like honey from bees! Shad has been a vegan for 20+ years and so it's been a long time since he's had honey, but he definitely remembers the taste and this has that taste. Mellody has those same delightful flowery notes that traditional clover honey has, because they source the same plants that honey bees do. The sweetness is mellow and goes perfectly with lemon tea. I would honestly use this over Agave nectar which always has an after taste for me.
What Is The Texture of Mellody Honey?
Mellody has an rich golden texture that has a not quite lightly creamy but smooth mouth feel. The consistency is great, and while it isn't as thick as honey from bees, it's thicker than maple syrup.
Final Recommendation
Is this the best Vegan Honey? Would we buy Mellody Honey again?
The answer is absolutely we will buy these again. Totally worth it and its definitely the best we've tried.
- Clean, plant-based ingredients.
- Tastes great in tea.
- Easy to drizzle on toast, biscuits and fruit.
