Why You’ll Love These
This easy to make vegetable side dish requires only a few ingredients; and is simple to double for a crowd.
Roasting in the oven makes this a pretty hands off recipe. In addition, roasting really brings out the natural sugars in brussels sprouts which helps prevent any bitter taste from them.
Halving the brussels sprouts helps reduce the cooking time making this a pretty quick recipe to cook.
Ingredients
- Brussels Sprouts - have omega-3 fatty acids, are high in fiber and vitamin C.
- Chili Garlic Sauce - has high amounts of vitamin C and antioxidants. We like Huy Fong brand available at major grocery stores, international store and online.
- Maple Syrup - gives a sweet smokey flavor.
- Lime Juice - this acid helps to brighten and tone down the sprouts cabbagey flavor.
- Minced Garlic
- Tamari Sauce
- Sesame Seeds
- Olive oil - to help them get crispy you need to toss them in plenty of oil. 2 tablespoons for every pound.
See recipe card for quantities.
If You’re Out Of Chili Garlic Sauce
These Sweet Chili Brussel Sprouts deliver a spicy kick but if you're out of Chili Garlic sauce; no worries, Sriracha is a great substitute.
If bought on the stalk leave them on the stalk. Put the stalk in the fridge or leave it in a cold place. If bought loose store them in an open container with a damp towel on top in refrigerator.
One serving is 1 cup of cooked Brussels sprouts.
Equipment
Foil and 2 large baking sheets. It's really important to not crowd your baking sheet. If the baking sheets are overstuffed the sprouts will steam and not crisp up.
Instructions For Oven
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
Step 2: In a small bowl, stir together chili garlic paste, maple syrup, lime juice, garlic and tamari. Set aside.
Preparing Brussels Sprouts For Roasting
Step 3: Prepare sprouts by removing any bruised, wet or damaged outer leaves. Using a paring knife, trim off the bottoms of the sprouts, just the dried and brown portion of the stem. Cut the sprouts in half lengthwise through the stem. Place in colander then rinse and drain until dry.
Step 4: Place on a foil lined baking sheet. Spread them out so they make a single layer on the baking sheet. Add olive oil, salt and pepper and mix well. For the most crispy Brussels sprouts. We like to flip each one facing cut side down to help the cut side get extra crispy.
Step 5: Roast for 20 minutes. Pour the sweet and spicy sauce over the roasted brussels sprouts and toss well to coat with mixture.
Step 6: Bake for additional 5 minutes. Transfer sprouts to serving dish. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Cooking Instructions For Air Fryer
Set Air Fryer to 400 F degrees for 15 minutes, after 10 minutes pull out the air fryer basket shake and add sweet and spicy sauce and cook for additional 5 minutes for total cooking time of 15 minutes.
Substitutions
Instead of brussels sprouts, try this recipe with cauliflower or broccoli.
If chili garlic paste is not available, substitute with sriracha sauce.
Tamari Sauce is a soy-sauce-like product. It's made with only soybeans (no wheat). If you are not on a gluten-free diet you can use soy sauce. Other substitutes are coconut aminos or liquid aminos.
Storage & Reheating
- Prep Ahead. The sprouts can be trimmed, cut and cleaned a day or two before needed. Store in refrigerator.
- Store Leftovers. To store, place in an airtight container. This will keep for 3 days.
- To Freeze. Due to the nature of the recipe, it is not recommended to freeze.
- To Reheat. To keep crispy rewarm in the oven at 350 degrees F for 5 or so minutes, until heated through. Warm, reheat in microwave.
