I remember back in the 90's discovering Dragon fruit at our Dekalb Farmer Market in Atlanta. I spotted this wild looking fruit - bright pink, spikey almost like an alien flower and though their no way that edible. Mild, slightly sweet and so refreshing - dragon fruit quickly became one of my favorite tropical fruits. What Does Dragonfruit Taste Like?
Dragon fruit - If you haven’t tried dragon fruit yet, you are missing out (Dragonfruit also known as pitaya, is the fruit of cactus plant). The flavor is a cross between a kiwi and watermelon.
Find them in the produce section along with other tropical fruits like mangos, pineapples and papaya and also in the freezer section of the grocery store.
Fresh Or Frozen Dragon fruit

Fresh Pink Dragonfruit is fantastic; however living in the south it can be difficult to find in season. When it’s at its peak flavor and ripeness. So we prefer to use frozen Dragonfruit. We like the Pitaya Plant Power smoothie packs, 4 individual pureed packets of organic dragonfruit pulp with seeds sold at Sprouts and Whole Foods grocery stores.
Ingredients

- Dragonfruit (also known as pitaya) - is the fruit of a cactus plant. Dragonfruit is native to Central and South America. Dragonfruit are rich in antioxidants. It’s naturally fat-free and high in fiber. It contains prebiotics, which are foods that feed the healthy bacteria called probiotics in your gut.
- Plant-Based Milk - Use almond milk or oat milk for an extra creamy smoothie.
Instructions
Step 1: Add non-dairy milk, pieces of dragon fruit, oatmeal, dates and banana to the blender.
Step 2: Start blending on low speed and gradually increasing to high. Scraping down sides as needed. Blend on high speed for 15-20 seconds until creamy and smooth.
Step 3: Pour the smoothie mixture into two cups. You can add ice cubes if you like too. If you do want a little extra sweetness you can add vegan honey to your sweetness.
Step 4: Serve and enjoy!
STORAGE
Smoothies are best if you drink them immediately.
To Store. Best when fresh, if you have any leftover smoothie it will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a 1 day.
To Prepare in Advance. Store in a sealed container, ziploc bags or a mason jar with the lid on in the refrigerator the day before. You may see a little separation just shake it up again.
Freeze. You can store smoothies or smoothie ingredients in the freezer for up to 3 months. As long as you're not using ice cubes, they will freeze and defrost beautifully. Make sure to leave a couple inches at the top of your container; so the liquid has room to expand when it freezes. Defrost smoothie in refrigerator night before. You can also use these souper ice cube tray that are very handy for meal prepping and freezing your smoothie.
