An Honest Review of Hooray Bacon.
Whether you are plant-based/vegan or avoid pork products because of religious restrictions.
If you’ve been looking or wishing you could find a bacon option for recipes like BLT, Eggs Benedict, vegan English Breakfast or just a crunchy salad topping. This may be what you have been looking for.
What was Hooray Bacon?
Hooray was a plant-based bacon substitute; that debuted its meat-free bacon in 300 stores in Whole Foods in November of 2020.
It is designed to look, cook, and taste like traditional bacon.
Unfortunately, on Sept. 7, 2024; Hooray Foods shared an update on Facebook and Instagram accounts, noting “after four years on the market and over five million bacon strips made, we have come to the difficult decision to cease our business operations.”
“Hooray Foods has created a plant-based bacon that mimics the cooking experience, taste, and texture of animal-based bacon. The minimally processed, zero cholesterol twist on an American classic… The company uses simple, clean ingredients.” in a statement from the company.
When we first saw this bacon replacement product, we were excited to try it. We’ve been on the hunt for a crispy bacon substitute. Although we love our mushroom bacon, we decided to give it a try.

What Does Hooray Bacon Taste Like?
Texture
The texture of the Hooray Foods Bacon is crispy. Just like that of pork bacon, crispy and crunchy.
Taste
The bacon has a great salty & umami flavor. There is also the flavor of coconut its main ingredient.
The coconut flavor did not turn us off; as the balance with the salty umami flavor was good. However, we know a lot of people who do not like the flavor of coconut. We would and have recommended this product; however, if you dislike that flavor this product is probably not a great fit.
Overall we’ve heard positive feedback on the texture and taste. But check out this Reddit Veganivore thread for more opinions on the taste.

Instructions
- You will be creating two doughs, one for the protein side of bacon and the other for the fatty portion.
- In two separate bowls, measure out a half cup of rice flour, tapioca starch, and melted coconut oil in each bowl whisk until smooth. Set aside.
- In separate cups, measure out ¾ cup of warm water and in second cup measure out ¾ quarter cup of warm, 100% beet juice, a brand like Lakewood Juice.
- To both cups of liquid add 1 teaspoon salt, one tablespoon umami powder, one tablespoon maple syrup, and one tablespoon liquid smoke to each cup and stir. Use an umami powder like Takiiumami powder and a vegan liquid smoke seasoning like Wrights Smoke.
- Combine the above seasoning liquid mixtures into the flour and oil mixture well sit aside early. Creating a red batter and a white batter.
- Transfer the red batter to a squeeze bottle. If you don't have a squeeze bottle, you can use a spoon or baster for the next step.
- Grease a half sheet pan with coconut oil, pour slightly less than one cup of white batter, then tip and shake the pan to cover as even and flat as possible.
- Draw 11 evenly spaced lines of red batter from top to bottom. Add a few dots and drag through them to create a marbled appearance.
- Bake for 5-7 minutes at 350 degrees fahrenheit, or until the sheet of bacon is bubbling.
- Cut across the stipes in the middle of the tray to create two separate sections.
- Cut along the red lines to separate each section into ten distinct strips.
- Repeat the same process on another greased tray to finish the batter.
- This batch makes 40 pieces of bacon, and we package it in 5 packs of 8 strips, rolled up in a sheet of parchment paper.
- Store your bacon in the freezer long term and defrost each pack as needed to cook and enjoy!
- Cooking after freezing:Skillet - Preheat the your pan medium low. Place a few strips of bacon directly on the pan. No oil is needed for the pan, the bacon cooks in its own fat! Crisp bacon on each side for 90 sec. Flip every 30 sec until to your liking. We like our bacon crispy! Drain excess grease on paper towel.Air Fryer - Set temperature to 375. Arrange bacon slices on parchment paper on a flat baking sheet, making sure they do not touch. Bacon will cook in 5 - 10 min depending on how crispy you want it. Remove when evenly browned and crispy. Place on a plate lined with a paper towel to absorb extra grease.
