    There are a lot of not so obvious ways for animal & wheat derived ingredients to unknowingly sneak into your products. We've been there and know the frustration of trying to figure which products are safe.

    5 Easy Ways To Make Going Vegan Gluten-free Easier

    • Always read your labels; ingredients and manufacturing processes can change without warning. Some items are label certified vegan and/or gluten-free and these items will be safe for the appropriate designation. For those items not certified ingredients can change and become unsuitable for your dietary needs
    • Meal Prepping - Batching cooking and freezing meals for later can be a life saver on a busy weeknight when cooking is just not an option
    • When you can buy extras so that you are always prepare. Its nothing worst then preparing a recipe and then realizing you out of a key ingredient
    • Kitchen Equipment - Instant Pots, Air Fryers and Food Processor/Blender helps prepping and reduces the cooking time
    • Canned Foods - don’t be afraid of canned beans, lentils, tomatoes and corn that can bring together a high protein bowl, hummus or salad together in minutes

    Ingredients You May Not Realize Are Not Vegan

    These not-so-obvious animal-based ingredients with names you don’t recognize to be animal-derived.

    • Casein (milk protein)
    • Whey (milk byproduct)
    • Gelatin (protein from animal skin, bones and ligaments) - desserts
    • Lanolin
    • Red food Dye
    • Rennet
    • Shellac
    • Lactose (sugar present in milk)
    • Lactic Acid (can be vegan but check that its not animal-derived) picklest, olives
    • Collagen
    • Amino acids
    • Fatty acids
    • Glycerin
    • Lard (fat from pig) - baked goods, refried beans, canned soups
    • Oleic Acid or Oleinic Acid (render fat) - could be in synthetic butter, vegetable fats & oils
    • D3 vitamin (derived from lambswool) - orange juice and multiple vitamins

    Avoiding Gluten Ingredients, Hidden Sources of Wheat

    So many names so many ways for gluten to sneak in. Gluten-containing ingredients to avoid under the following names:

    Check out this comprehensive gluten-free food list and gluten-free need to know

    • Malt, malt flavor, malt extract, malt vinegar, malt syrup, malt vinegar, brewer’s yeast
    • Ale, barley, beer
    • Soy sauce
    • Seitan
    • Bleached flour, bran, bread flour,brown flour,
    • Brown rice syrup (unless the food is labeled gluten-free)
    • Bulgur, couscous, dextrin (unless the source is gluten-free), durum, farina, farro, gluten flour, graham flour, granary flour, groats, harina, kamut, matzo, rye, orzo,semolina, self-rising flour, spelt, smoke flavoring, triticale, white flour, whole meal flour
    • Vegetable gum
    • Modified starch (unless the source is gluten-free)
    • Hydrolyzed vegetable (wheat) protein
    • Ingredients with the words “wheat,” “barley,” or “rye” in the name or in parentheses after the name. i.e. wheatgerm

    3 Problematic Vegan Gluten-Free Items

    • Oatmeal - is naturally gluten free. The issue is that oatmeal is often processed in facilities that process gluten-containing grains like wheat, rye, and barley. Cross contamination becomes an issue in these facilities. Look for oatmeal processed in a dedicated facility certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization
    • Sugar - look for sugars that do not use bone-char to filter its sugar. Peta has a great list of sugar brands that are vegan.
    • Honey - some vegans avoid eating honey to take a stand against bee farming practices that are thought to harm bee health.

    • Beans & Legumes - Black beans, Chickpeas, Lentils
    • Grains - Quinoa, Fonio, Rice
